NBA Legend Jerry West Dies

NBA legend Jerry West has died at the age of 86. West is a figure who is considered to have inspired the NBA logo.

The NBA announced that West died at the age of 86, Wednesday (12/6). The NBA offers its condolences to the legend’s family.

“I cherish my friendship with Jerry and the knowledge he has shared with me over the years about basketball and life.” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

“On behalf of the NBA, we extend our deepest condolences to Jerry’s wife, Karen, his family, and his many friends in the NBA community,” he explained.

West became a legend as a player after playing for the LA Lakers between 1960-1974. La Lakers is the only club that West defends.

He won the NBA title in 1972. He was also always included in the NBA All-star during his 14 year career at the LA Lakers. While with the United States National Team, he was able to win an Olympic gold medal in 1960.

West has the nickname Mr. Clutch. This is because he is often able to score points at crucial points.

Because of his greatness, West is also said to be the figure who inspired the NBA logo. The silhouette of the basketball player on the NBA logo is thought to be West’s figure.

In fact, until now the NBA has never stated who the figure from the logo silhouette is. However, Silver also admitted that the silhouette was similar to West. The NBA logo was used starting in 1971 when West was successful with the Lakers.

West retired as a player in 1974. After retiring, he spent three years coaching the Lakers from 1976-1979. However, his career as a coach was not as flashy as when he was still playing.
