Wout Weghorst became the hero of the Dutch national team when they won over the Polish national team. The 31 year old player scored the decisive goal.
The Netherlands won 2-1 over Poland. In the match at the Volksparkstadion, Sunday (17/6/2024), Ronald Koeman’s team fell behind first.
Through a corner kick, Poland broke through the Dutch goal in the 16th minute. Adam Buska scored the goal with a header.
The Netherlands responded well to the goal. Wojciech Szczesny failed to anticipate Cody Gakpo’s kick.
Deadlocked on the front line, Koeman made substitutions. Jeremie Frimpong and Wout Weghorst came on, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay came off in the 80th minute.
Weghorst didn’t take long to make a contribution. Using Nathan Ake’s pass, Weghorst’s shot from close range was the decisive winner for the Netherlands.
Receiving 14 minutes of playing time, Weghorst was able to make eight touches. The former Manchester United player’s passing accuracy was 100 percent, and he won aerial duels twice.
Koeman admitted that Weghorst did provide a different dimension for the Netherlands on the front lines.
“Wout Weghorst can play and he adds more value to the team, he has a different way of playing and that’s what we need,” Koeman said on the DtEntertainmentcity.
